Course Description: Out two-day course design will allow a more in-depth look at the research we have developed to efficiently freeze equine sperm. Small class size allows for individual attention. The course will emphasize a quality end product and simplify the management of the straws for future use. Participants will have a better understanding of the entire freezing process, quality control, storage, management and artificial insemination and much more. We cover topics in Advanced Reproductive Techniques (ART) such as Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) and the cryopreservation of epididymal and chemically ejaculated sperm. Hands-on laboratory sessions will provide an opportunity for participants to freeze, thaw and evaluate equine semen. Participants have ample time to work with and become comfortable with all necessary pieces of equipment and products used. Specific lecture and laboratory topics include:

  • Preparation of spermatozoa for freezing & methods for freezing equine sperm
  • Response of spermatozoa to freezing and thawing
