Course Description:  It is required to register and complete the online Stallion Frozen Semen course prior to attendance.  The online course covers all lectures and prerequisites needed to successfully complete the laboratory session.

The one-day course design will allow a more hands-on approach, enabling the attendee to efficiently freeze equine sperm. Small class sizes allow individual guidance. The course will emphasize a quality end product and simplify the management of the straws for future use. Participants will have a better understanding of the entire freezing process, quality control, storage, and frozen semen management. Hands-on laboratory sessions will provide an opportunity for participants to freeze, thaw and evaluate equine semen. Participants have ample time to work with and become comfortable with all the necessary pieces of equipment and products used. Specific laboratory topics include:

  • Preparation of spermatozoa for a test freeze & methods for freezing equine sperm
  • Response of spermatozoa to freezing and thawing
  • Freezing extenders
  • Proper handling, storage and thawing procedures
  • Lab equipment requirements
  • Proper use of cushion media

Additional topics we may be able to cover if time allows:

  • Freezing sperm for ICSI use
  • Epididymal sperm recovery and freezing
  • Chemical ejaculation (for frozen semen)
  • Fertility estimates of frozen semen
