Prerequisites

  • Clear understanding of maxillofacial anatomy, dental anatomy, dental regional anesthesia, basic dental radiography, equine periodontal disease, and causes & types of equine dental fracture.
  • Competence with basic equine extraction equipment.
  • Competence with equine dental radiograph acquisition.
  • Competence in providing CRIs for standing equine dental care (not covered in course)

** The above topics will not be reviewed during this course. It is expected that course participants have mastered the above fundamentals of equine dental care. ** 

Description

Goals for this meeting will be to provide equine veterinarians instruction and education in the following topics:

  • Recognizing and treating periodontal disease.
  • Clinical implications of non-routine malocclusions.
  • Treatment non-routine malocclusions via well placed odontoplasty.
  • Comprehensive treatment planning with preparation for extractions via review of oral exam and radiographs.
  • Incisor and canine extraction techniques.
  • "Simple" intraoral extraction technique and fragment removal.
  • Minimally invasive transbuccal extraction technique.
  • Coronectomy, tooth sectioning, and odontoplasty to aid extraction.
  • Radiculectomy and modified repulsion extraction techniques.

Jack Easley
DVM, MS, DABVP/Eq, Diplomate, American Veterinary Dental College/Eq

Dr. Jack Easley received a DVM degree from Tuskegee University in 1976. After completing a Large Animal Internship at Oklahoma State University, Easley served as an Associate Professor of Surgery at Kansas State University from 1978 until 1980 where he completed an Equine Surgical Residency and received a Masters Degree in Surgery. He was an Associate Professor of Surgery at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, 1980-1982. In 1982, Easly was certified as a Diplomate for the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Equine) and continues this recertification. Since 1982, Easley has been in private practice in Shelbyville, Kentucky where he has an exclusive equine only practice with an emphasis on dentistry. In 2014, he became board certified by the American Veterinary Dental College as an equine dental specialist.

For over 40 years, Easley has lectured extensively on and promoted equine veterinary dentistry throughout the world. He has written hundreds of articles for publication in professional as well as lay equine journals, textbooks, and periodicals. Easley serves on the editorial review boards for Equine Veterinary Education, Equine Veterinary Journal, and the Veterinary Dental Journal. Easley is the co-editor and major contributor of Equine Dentistry, first published in 1999 by Harcourt-Brace Publishing (Saunders) being the first equine dental textbook in recent times. This textbook was ultimately printed in Spanish and German; the 2nd edition published in October 2004 and the 3rd edition co-authored with Drs. Paddy Dixon and Jim Schumacher released in 2010.

Hubert Simhofer
AO University Professor, Dr. Med. Vet., Diplomate of the Equine Branches of the American and Euorpean Veterinary Dental Colleges (Diplomate AVDC-EQ and EVDC-Equine), Swiss (SVPM/ASME) and German (IGFP) Certificates in Equine Dentistry

Dr. Simhofer graduated from the University of Veterinary Medicine in 1992. Following a two year period in a private equine clinic near Vienna, he completed his doctoral thesis in 1996 and returned to the University as an assistant at the Clinic for Surgery where he specialized in Equine Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery.

In 2013 Simhofer became a specialist of the newly formed equine branches of the American and European Dental Colleges. Since 2015, Simhofer has served as an associate professor for Equine Surgery in Vienna. Simhofer has published several studies and clinical articles in peer-reviewed veterinary journals and lectures regularly at national and international courses and conferences on equine dentistry.

Molly Rice
DVM, DAVDC-Equine

Dr. Rice graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Veterinary School in 2003. Rice was a general equine practitioner until 2009 when she started working in an equine dentistry practice.

In addition to clinical work, Rice enjoys educating other veterinarians, veterinary students, and clients at continuing education events and meetings. She became a diplomate of the Equine American Veterinary Dental College in June of 2018.

Frank Schellenberger
DVM

Dr. Schellenberger graduated from the University of Leipzig, Germany in 1995. After four years work in an equine clinic he opened in 1999 his own private practice specializing in equine dentistry. Schellenberger works as an external specialist for several clinics in Germany and Switzerland.

In 2008, Schellenberger established Pegasos4d, a company dedicated to the development and production of innovative instruments for equine dentistry. Since 2010, Schellenberger has run practical workshops at the University Leipzig, Germany and worldwide. He focuses on different oral extraction techniques including the Minimally Invasive Transbuccal Extraction. Schellenberger currently focuses on studying the treatment of diastemata and EOTRH and encouraging the work with water cooling.

Jennifer Rawlinson
DVM, AVDC Diplomate, AVDC Equine Diplomate

Dr. Rawlinson graduated from Cornell University Veterinary College in 1998. She completed her residency program in Dentistry at the University of Pennsylvania in 2004 and became an AVDC Diplomate in 2005 and AVDC Equine Diplomate in 2014. From 2004-2011, she created and ran the Dentistry Service at Cornell University. Rawlindson serves as the Dentistry Service at Colorado State University since 2013. The Dentistry Service is a species comprehensive service caring for small animals, equine, farm animal, and exotics/wildlife patients.

In 2018, she became the President-Elect of the American Veterinary Dental College. Rawlinson's research focus is equine maxillofacial regional anesthesia and is published in many other areas of interest as well.

Registration and Cancellation Information

Pre-registration is required for all veterinary continuing education conferences. Courses are subject to cancellation when registration is inadequate to cover costs of the program. Registration at least six weeks before the course will help prevent cancellation. Course fee is payable to Colorado State University. Fee includes proceedings, materials, supplies, refreshments and in some cases, lunch. Please see course schedules for more information.

Refunds

Registration fees are fully refundable until 60 days prior to the course, 50% refundable between 60 and 30 days prior to the course and non-refundable after 30 days prior to the course. Fees will be refunded 100% at any date if vacated spot can be filled.
