Graphics

Alt Attribute
All images require the ALT attribute.

alt="Descriptive text"

The text should be either a description of the graphic for static graphics or a description of where the user will end up for hyperlinked graphics.

.GIF v .JPG: Which to choose
Graphics that are highly detailed, such as photographs, work better as .JPGs. Graphics that are less-detailed with distinct color differences, such as our logo, work better as .GIFs.

Transparency
Any irregularly shaped (with more or fewer than four sides) graphic on a Web page should either be made transparent or created with a white background.

Hyperlinked Images
Images used as links should have the border turned off using border="0".

Correctly linked graphic
Correct Image as Link.
Incorrectly linked graphic
Incorrect Image as Link

Location
Images for use across the whole site are to be placed in the root directory. If the graphic is to be used in only one section of the Web site then the files belong in a graphics subdirectory.

Size
The width and height of a graphic should be incorporated into the coding; the page will download more quickly:

width="X" height="Y"

Graphic files should be no larger than 100 K for users with high speed networks, and no larger than 50 K for users with phone modems. Use interlacing only on larger image files.

Any graphic files that need to be resized should be resized in a graphics program like Adobe Photoshop. Avoid resizing graphics by changing the height and width attributes in HTML. If you need help resizing images in Photoshop, contact Jill Lenz at 491-6585 or jill.lenz@colostate.edu.

Images used in CVMBS templates
The following images are provided in .exe format. To save the file to your computer, right click on the file name and choose "Save Target As". You will be prompted for the location to save the file. Once saved, you will need a zip program to extract the .psd file. Then you can manipulate the original layered files in Photoshop.
