Jill Lenz, Chair, started the meeting at 9:30 am.
Our College has the vision of eventually using a Content Management System to manage our Web site. Mitzy and Robin explained what a Content Management System is, how their college has achieved this same vision, and how it changed the workflow for those that publish Web pages.
A Content Management System is software that keeps track of every piece of content on a web site. Content can be simple text, photos, music, video, documents, or just about anything.
Warner College of Natural Resources chose to use an open source CMS product called Joomla (http://www.joomla.org/)Joomla is a free dynamic content management system running in a LAMP environment (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) that anyone can use, share, and support.
The product has a vibrant development group and updates are released regularly. There are multiple templates and approximately 4,600 plug-ins as well as several different editors.
After the migration of the web site, the product has ultimately saved time because training needs have been reduced and the number of pages in the site have been reduced, leading to resolution of some old hardware problems.
Their experience with the product, overall, has been very satisfactory. A copy of the presentation is available at http://welcome.warnercnr.colostate.edu/technology-seminars/index.php
