New Business

  1. Google Map Link to ARBL

Sallie Varner - Dick Bowen has put a Google map link to the ARBL building on our website.  It's more interactive than maps we used previously.  He thought that other members of the committee might be interested in this.  A "key" is needed from Google to set this up.  I have no information on how it's done, myself, but I'm sure Dick would be happy to help others set it up if they're interested.  Here's our link:
    http://www.vivo.colostate.edu/arbl.html

Discussion: We followed the link, used the zoom in/out features and agreed it was a useful link. Others may find a link to the Main Campus map at http://parking.colostate.edu/files/maps/mapside.pdf useful to help identify paid parking on main campus. This map is linked from the CSU Maps page and the CSU Parking Services home page.

  2. Thom Hadley

    Improving Our Web Presence

The Dean has committed resources to improving our college's Web presence to be competitive with other vet schools with a professional look and advanced technologies such as podcasts and text messaging.

The Don Zimmerman Web usability project researches the flow of our Web information and offers recommendations based on that research. We are returning to the idea of a content management system where content can be updated without the knowledge of HTML. Eventually a professional consulting company will be hired by July 1, 2008 to build a consistent design framework and the content management system.

Jill has been relieved of some of her duties to participate and observe the Don Zimmerman Web Usability Project and begin working on top level pages such as the College home page and the four department home pages to bring them into consistency as far as:

    • valid HTML
    • logical semantic structure
    • compliance with the latest CSU Web Standards and Guidelines
    • consistent look in the content area
    • content review and rewrite with Carol Borchert

It will be a few years until we get a consistent look and Web committee members will continue to add content and resources to their respective pages.

    MediaSite

Thom briefly explained that MediaSite is a recording unit that captures lectures to watch remotely, with searchable audio. One of its popular uses is to simultaneously show in two windows a PowerPoint presentation in one and the instructor's image (and voice) in the other window. Possible examples include Grand Rounds for the freshmen vet students.

Merry mentioned that Tom Johnson, Jim Abraham and Dave Gilkey may be interested parties from ERHS. The unit hasn't been formally publicized to the College yet, but a demo could be performed at a faculty meeting. More details on our process with MediaSite is available at http://www.cvmbs.colostate.edu/intech/mediasite/.

Old Business

  1. Don Zimmerman Project Update

Jill has participated with Don and his research associates to develop a list for the card sorting exercise. The card sorting began this week and Jill will observe a card sorting session later this afternoon at the Student Center. Usability testing in Don's lab begins later next week.

  2. Possible agenda items
    • Size of images in web pages
    • Use of PDA’s or smart phones to view our web pages
    • Consistent capture of new faculty images for web pages
    • New server web capabilities
    • Left hand navigation on the College home page

Jill suggested that all except the last item, could still be pursued as agenda items at this time without interferring with the Don Zimmerman project.

The meeting concluded at 10:00 am.

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 9th, 9:00-10:00 am, Environmental Health Building Conference Room 120.

Minutes submitted by Jill Lenz.
