WEBMASTERS COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES

August 8 , 2006

Present: Tom Harmon, Dr. Hellyer, Jill Lenz, Merry Wright.

Tom Harmon began the meeting at 9:00 a.m.

New Business

  1. Dr. Hellyer replaces Dr. Fettman as the ex-oficio member of the committee.

    Tom will verify Dr. Hellyer is on the CVMBSWEBMASTERS listserv. Tom gave a brief review of the redesign process to Dr. Hellyer to fill him in on the latest project. Dr. Hellyer commented that he likes the new look. It was explained that today's meeting was a work session to address any issues for webmasters transferring to the new look, so we excused Dr. Hellyer once we started validating and working on pages in Dreamweaver.
  2. ERHS Thesis PDF files on web server. Merry Wright said one of her department co-workers wants to post theses in PDF format on the web server. Merry was concerned about space issues on the web server, but Tom said this was not a problem.

    Tom also mentioned the new future web server which will have more space and more capabilities.
  3. Merry showed us the new Toxicology web page at http://www.cvmbs.colostate.edu/erhs/Tox%20Web%20Content/toxindex.htm and explained how they deviated from the current redesign to a "CSI - Crime Scene Investigation" look. Discussion followed. Currently there is no college branding on this page except for text in the first paragraph and an old CSU logo is used. The current CSU logo does not have the tagline "Knowledge to Go Places". Tom recommended to Mary to copy the photo with "Graduate Programs in Toxicology" and the three columns of information into the new template's white content area if she will be the one to maintain the page - it will make her work of updating easier. Jill suggested links from the various areas listed in the 2nd paragraph to content-rich information.

Old Business

  1. Redesign Work Session on ERHS pages - we reviewed Merry's ERHS pages in development by running them through Dreamweaver's validation tool and also the W3C's online validators at http://validator.w3.org as a final check. We cleaned up all coding errors with Dreamweaver's "Clean Up XTHML" feature and manually until she had one page that was error-free to use to propagate the rest of her ERHS pages.

  2. Redesign Work Session on /cvmbs pages - We looked at some of the files in the /cvmbs directory, ran them through the validators, found errors and did some minor clean-up. Tom will help Linda get all her pages error-free.

    Remember: always validate before you propagate! (Many of us have learned this the hard way.)

The meeting/worksession concluded at 10:20 am.

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 12 th, 9:00-10:00 am, W1 A/Z.
