WEBMASTERS COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES

April 11, 2006

Present: Tom Harmon, Charlie Kerlee, Jill Lenz, Erin Napier, Merry Wright.
Guest: Ken Crump (working on the Cancer Biology Graduate Program, a sub-site of the interdisciplinary program Cell and Molecular Biology, housed within the Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences).

Tom Harmon and Erin Napier, Co-Chairs, began the meeting at 9:10 a.m.

Old Business

1. Redesign Update – the college web page layout - Top Global Navigation and Left-side Navigation - Tom Harmon showed up Linda's redesign work at http://www.cvmbs.colostate.edu/webmaste/redesign/cvmbs/

   Erin, Tom and Linda met to decide what template Linda Tarnoff would use for the college home page and pages in the cvmbs directory. They decided against the top global navigation and sub-navigation flyouts for the college home page and pages in the /cvmbs directory because it was too hard to reorganize the pages into only four categories at this time. The top global navigation only contains a link back to the college home page and a search field that Tom will code to have a Google search on our site similar to the one used on the CSU home page. The left-side navigation will remain consistent on all the pages, using the categories from the current college home page.Some of the lower level pages linked from /cvmbs pages may have the left-side navigation tailored to that specific section, for example the Instructional Technology homepage. Erin made a separate template and style sheets for the cvmbs directory and college home page for Linda to use.

   Charlie confirmed he can access the w:/ drive now mounted on his local computer.

   Charlie asked if the college home page would still have rotating news items. Tom said yes, using the same Javascript that is used now.

2. Redesign Instructions - Jill Lenz referred to a printed rough draft of the instructions of the 2006 version of the Web Style Guide. The basic instructions covered the following:

   • How to get started on the redesign. We used the /dlab subfolder as an example, assuming they would pick the same template style as the special one built for Clinical Sciences, and built the file structure for their site by creating subfolders, and copying and pasting template file(s), accompanying css files (3 per template) and accompanying image files into the file structure.
   • How to reorganize your department "image" and "css" subfolders for sites that are already in the process of redesigning. We used the /mip directory as an example site in Dreamweaver and moved all the css (Cascading Style Sheet) folders to a "css" subfolder created in the root directory. Ideally this file structure would exist before pages are propagated, eliminating this step.
   • Updating the footer. We used the /cvmbs subfolder as an example for sites that are already in the process of redesigning. Ideally this update would be made once on the template customized for the department or unit, eliminating a site-wide update after pages are propagated.

   As we worked through the instructions for each bullet point, we collected suggestions and improvements to the rough draft of instructions that Jill will update.

The meeting concluded at 10:15 am.
