Webmaster Committee Meeting Minutes
April 9, 2002
Members Present: Sallie Varner, Jill Lenz, Mary Pridgen, Sallie Hilligoss, Erin Napier, Linda Tarnoff and Martin Fettman
Also Present: Joe Strecker
1. Old Business
Revision of topic navigation bar. Jill Lenz presented samples of the new top navigational bar with new caduceus logo, and larger text to emphasize the department name. Jill showed samples of the department/unit name incorporated into the top navigation table completed by Sallie Varner of 800 and 600 pixels. It was agreed that the top navigational bar would be 800 pixels wide with printable areas kept in mind and the CSU logo on the left (the gold one per Tom Milligan's memo online at http://webdev.colostate.edu/index.asp?url=memo) and the new CVMBS caduceus logo in green and gold on the right. The yellow horizontal bar will change to gold. Jill will create customized images and top navigational tables for each department/unit per Sallie's design. Jill will also update the templates and the entire Web Style Guide for web designers to begin to implement the new designs voted on today.
Sallie and Erin stated that they are still working on the MIP web page. Sallie added that they are having problems with flyouts and that the committee keeps making changes in the design of the web pages.
Dr. Fettman indicated that he liked the look of the new top navigational bars. He also added that Thom Hadley was looking into a software program that would allow all webmasters in the CVMBS to log in and update their particular changes.
2. Cascading Style Sheets
The toplevel.css and minor.css have been validated using two tools, 1) W3C CSS Validation Service at http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/ 2) CSSCheck at http://www.htmlhelp.org/tools/csscheck/. Jill asked that all references to cvmbs.css and major.css be removed. There is a link to the validators on the Webmaster Committee home page under "CSU's ATRC's Accessibility Checkers and Tools" at http://www.colostate.edu/Depts/ATRC/tools.htm.
3. Bobby Approval
Jill met with Cath Kilcommons from ATRC regarding “Bobby Approval”. Cath suggested to continue to use Bobby as a checker, and replace the Bobby Approval logo with the “NCAM” logo. The NCAM logo is free and indicates that the web page designer has made efforts to accommodate disabled web users. It was agreed that the logo will be a link to our page titled "Accessibility Features" in the CVMBS Web Style Guide.
Presentation on Web Trends Report
Joe Strecker gave a presentation regarding “web trends”. He stated it is a very valuable tool for web designers. Designers can find things such as who accesses their website, time, browser used, and the time it took to deliver the page. Joe stated that if anyone on the committee would like to have reports from web trends to contact him and let him know what information they would like.
The next Webmaster meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 7 at 9:00am in W01 Anatomy. Sallie Hilligos wondered if the meetings could perhaps be held quarterly. This item will be discussed at the next meeting.
