WEBMASTERS’ COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES

Room 305 Occupational Therapy Building

Ms. Lenz called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m.

Members Present: M. Hendricks, S. Hilligoss, J. Lenz, C. Moth, M. Pridgen, C. Schmer, and L. Tarnoff

Committee members met in Room 305 of the Occupational Therapy Building where Ms. Marla Roll and Mr. Michael Bastien from CSU's Assistive Technology Resource Center gave a critique of our College home page from the perspective of persons with disabilities.

A 4-page handout prepared by Mr. Bastien was distributed.  It is available at http://www.cvmbs.colostate.edu/webmaster/Vet_school.pdf

The committee members saw the screen reader software “Jaws” read the College home page.  The committee was highly praised for the design of the College home page and its accessibility.  Only two suggestions for improvement were given:

  1. Add ALT text to the rotating images in the center of the page.
  2. Use a color other than white for the background for those with visual processing difficulties, such as tan or yellow.

It was also recommended that the page become “Bobby Approved” with the Bobby web accessibility validation service that is free and offers a stamp of approval to display on the page, i.e. “Bobby Approved”.  Mr. Bastien encouraged us to do so to serve as a role model for other CSU pages.

Before and after the presentation, members of the committee had a chance to see some of the adaptive computing devices available and learn what a valuable resource this unit is for students.  Ms. Roll announced that many of these devices such as the screen reader are available in the Morgan Library Assistive Technology area.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:00 a.m.
