Mission: To provide an opportunity for veterinary schools to expose students in their first and second years of veterinary medical school to biomedical research.
The Merck Company Foundation has funded summer research programs at veterinary schools since 1988 and established the Merck-Merial Veterinary Scholars Program in 1998. In 2009 the program became the Merial Veterinary Scholars Program. Merial will help to support up to 8 summer fellows at CSU in 2012.
Additional mentors with open positions in labs
The Morris Animal Foundation's Veterinary Student Scholars (VSS) program gives veterinary students hands-on exposure to veterinary medical research in hopes that some will consider research as a career where they are so critically needed. This year CSU can nominate one student for an MAF VSS. Applications will be accepted via the link below for applications supported by Merial and MAF. One student will be selected to compete for MAF funds and will be instructed on how to apply for funds after the internal review process.
Updated Information (Jan 2012)
Interested in a summer research position at our sister school in Scotland? One student will be supported in a summer research exchange program. Travel costs up to $2000 and stipend will be provided. For more information about specific details, contact Aimee Oke or Dr. Sue VandeWoude.
The American Humane Association has generously provided funds for two veterinary student summer stipends which we will match with two additional positions (for total support of four students). The intent of this research is "directed to advancement of the protection, welfare, health and/or benefit of children and/or animals and/or their role in society."
We will administer two of these positions via the application to the Veterinary Summer Research Program described below. Students applying for this program will be reviewed internally for the applicability of the program to their project goals, and need not provide any addition information for their application to be considered. Students selected for participation (and their mentors) will receive specific guidelines for the award.
Dr. Lappin will administer two of these projects via his Center for Companion Animal Studies PVM grant program (see below).
The deadline for application submission for Merial, MAF, and RDSVS summer fellowships is Feb. 6, 2012! Don't delay, begin today!
