Dr. Dow’s laboratory studies the role of innate immunity in cancer, infectious diseases, vaccine adjuvant design, and chronic inflammatory disorders.  Projects examine the role of myeloid suppressor cells in tumor growth, the immune response to Burkholderia pseudomallei, how this organism infects the GI tract, and how immunotherapy may enhance antibiotic activity.  Investigation includes new vaccine approaches to the treatment of chronic staphylococcal infection, as well as immune modulatory properties of mesenchymal stem cells and the potential for clinical use of stem cell therapy for treatment of chronic kidney disease and asthma.

Dr. Slayden’s laboratory emphasizes the study of bacterial differentiation into distinct cellular populations. The premise is that although bacteria are genetically clonal they are phenotypically differentiated. The benefit to the bacteria is optimization of population survival by differentiation into distinct cell types. These cell types may include: actively growing cells, metabolically dormant, hyper-mutable and altruistically suicidal.
