Our major research emphasis is the study of arbovirus-vector interactions.
These studies include determination of the evolutionary potential of arboviruses
in vectors and elucidation of gene structure-biological function relationships
that contribute to preferred vector-vertebrate cycles in nature. Evolutionary
events are studied to determine their epidemic significance (e.g. vector
and vertebrate host range determinants) and to define molecular determinants
of arbovirus cycle integrity. Molecular transformation of arthropod genomes
and other molecular genetic approaches are being used to study the molecular
biology of the vector. A major International Collaborations in Infectious Disease Research grant and accompanying Fogarty Center training grant focus upon defining the virus and vector genetic determinants of dengue hemorrhagic fever in Mexico. The collaborating institutions are the Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan, Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, and the Instituto Politecnica Nacional in Mexico City. A new NIH Emerging Virus Disease Unit contract and a CDC Fellowship Training program focus upon research and training needs in emerging viral diseases and vector-borne diseases. Other research programs include longitudinal field studies on hantavirus epidemic potential in Colorado and surveillance for West Nile virus introduction into Mexico.
