The only thing constant is change……..

Since our recently appointed Managing Editor, Copy Editor, News Editor, Opinion Editor, Feature Editor, Sports Editor, Photo/Graphics Editor, and Advertising Manager named Dan Champion has run off to re-kindle his middle school teaching career, we searched long and hard for someone to fill his shoes.  We are pleased to announce that the glass slipper fit on the foot of Collette Hageman (nee DeWitt) who will serve as our new MIPnews production editor.  Jeff Wilusz will remain in his position as Editor-in-Chief. So please submit all newsworthy stories and pictures to Collette Hageman or Jeff Wilusz.

	Alex Byas Anatomic Pathology Alex came to Fort Collins from Macon, GA one week ago. Her research interests are focused in infectious disease. In her spare time, she enjoys yoga, travelling, going to music shows and cooking.
	Erin McWhorter Comparative Medicine Erin is no newcomer to Fort Collins, coming here five years ago from West Virginia. Her research interests include reproductive physiology, stem cell differentiation, and placenta physiology. In her spare time she enjoys walking/hiking with her Yorkie Finn and husband Josh, knitting, reading, movies, eating out, cooking, and baking. Erin is pursuing her PhD in the BMS Department.
	Anna Fagre Microbiology Anna has lived in Fort Collins since 2010, moving to our fair city from Waverly, Iowa. Her research interests are in zoonoses, emerging infectious disease, food safety/security, transboundary disease, and wildlife disease. In her spare time, Anna enjoys volunteering with a local publishing company, doing yoga, going on mountain adventures with her dogs, and riding horses.
	Lauren Harris Anatomic Pathology Fresh from Philadelphia (we imagine that the poor play of the Phillies this season likely motivated her move…), Lauren’s research interests are in cancer, development, and stem cell biology. In her free time Lauren enjoys running, hiking with her dog, traveling, skiing, grilling out, and trying new foods.
	Katie Knapek Comparative Medicine Two weeks removed from Pittsburgh, Katie comes to MIP with interests in infectious disease and containment. In her spare time she enjoys traveling, reading, white water rafting, horseback riding, and anything outdoors.
	Caitlyn Martinez Clinical Pathology Caitlyn hails from Tucumcari, New Mexico but has called Fort Collins home for the last four years. Her research interests include autoimmune and infectious diseases. In her spare time Caitlyn enjoys hiking and camping, traveling when time permits, baking, art, reading, and hanging out with her dogs and husband.

MIP in the Community

On May 15, 2015 the rain held off long enough to allow the Dobos Lab to spend a day at The Harmony House of Fort Collins, which is part of CASA of Larimer County (http://casalarimer.com/).  The historical Ziegler family farmhouse is used for visits between children and adults in need of a safe and comfortable environment.   

Last November, the Dobos Lab spent a day of service doing a deep clean on the house and some Fall yardwork that needed and they knew that they wanted to come back in the Spring and serve again.  The lab had specific goals in mind and knew what supplies they needed, so Keri Wright went out and personally petitioned local businesses for supplies.  Businesses were eager to help  them out, and they received over $660 in donations and gift cards!  With the donations and gift cards, they gathered supplies including treated wood and screws, flowers and flower pots, bushes, sand, soil, weed cover, and weed killer.  After gathering all of the supplies, they spent the day cleaning up the yard, weeding, planting, and fixing up a badly deteriorated porch.

The lab wants to acknowledge the local businesses who were generous in our endeavor: Gulley Greenhouse, Fort Collins Nursery, Walmart on N. Denver in Loveland, Walmart on 65th St. in Loveland, Home Depot on Magnolia, Ace Hardware of Windsor, Lowe's in Loveland, Lowe's in Fort Collins, Fossil Creek Nursery, Hersh Trees, and Home Depot on JFK Parkway.  In addition, they are very grateful for the help of Karen’s husband Chris, and his friend Rob who spent their time helping them in the project by planning, destructing, and rebuilding the porch.

Fighting Leprosy One School at a Time

Ever wonder what motivates John Spencer to get up out of bed and go to work every morning?  I guess you can sum it up in one word – Leprosy.  Eighty percent of all leprosy cases occur in India, Indonesia, and Brazil. John Spencer works closely with a team of researchers and clinicians led by Dr. Claudio Salgado in Pará, Brazil in the Amazon region. Since 2009, the team has made repeated site visits to a dozen communities in Pará.  John and colleagues visit schools to diagnose new cases in children, and then visit those children’s households to try to find the index case so that treatment of all of those diagnosed will stop the spread of disease.
