Zabel and Slayden also switched from Special to Regular (tenure track) appointments. That should keep the CSU business card printers in business….

We also had a lot of changes in faculty ranks as well. Diane Ordway, Debra Kamstock, Jenny Taylor, Torsten Eckstein, Andre Torres and Colleen Duncan all accepted faculty positions in the Dept. We also unfortunately had to say goodbye to Karamjeet Pandher, Tian Wang and Helle Bielefeldt-Ohmann. We wish everyone the best of luck in their new positions.

2008 was also the year of both the DNC at Invesco as well as our own DMC right here off Drake Rd. We all look forward to the opening of the new Diagnostic Medicine Center in 2009.

We mourned the passing of two valuable colleagues – Drs. Amol Amin and Dennis Knudson. They’ll both surely live on in MIP’s heart as well as its science as we continue to build upon the love and insights they left us.

MIP researchers brought in 105 grant awards amounting to an impressive $24,738,000 for the fiscal year that ended June 30th (according to the VP for Research’s database). While not quite as high a number as in previous years due largely to the overall downturn in federal funding, it still reflects the robust and vibrant research environment we have in the Dept.

On the education front, MIP sent ~ 70 new BS-level microbiologists into the world and graduated its first ever ACVM Microbiology Board-certified residents (Drs. Pabilonia and Torres). Notably, our graduate students were recognized with grants/awards/honors 15 times in 2008. Not to be outdone, our undergraduates garnered a whopping 24 local, regional and national recognitions! Finally, since being good just isn’t good enough for MIP, we overhauled our graduate topics course (MIP700), moved department seminars to Friday mornings and added a course in Bioanalytical Pathology (MIP581) to improve and expand our learning environment.

Oh yeah – this newsletter that your reading (and hopefully enjoying) celebrated its 50th issue this past summer. As it enters its ’midlife crisis’ year, be sure to stay tuned. Who knows what shenanigans you’ll see….

Neither rain, nor snow, nor freezing temperatures in her office keep Pat Schultheiss from delivering the diagnosis

Alternative Captions:
Pat must be examining specimen slides from the Big Bad Wolf

Wanted: Appropriately dressed faculty to be part of MIP s recreation of the Nativity Scene

Dr. Schultheiss displays her method of hiding from students during Finals Week

Pat models the latest Yves Saint Laurent collection for the fashion-conscious pathologist

I know someone who ll be asking Santa for a wool hat this year

Submit your own

Focus on Finals Week

Click Here for the questions to MIPuzzle #37
Click Here or the answers to MIPuzzle #37

Who will serve as a role model for our profession s youth?

Where have all the heroes gone?

Look no further

We proudly present to you Episode 1 of "Captain Justice."

(that s pronounced juhs-tis; not "Just Ice")

Art: Brooke Jarvie
Concept: Paul Moresco
Contributions by: Madeline Anna, Jolie Gallagher, Zarine Garcia, Eric Golike, Katriana Popichak, Brett Rosenberg, Brice Thompson, and many others
Thoroughly chagrined role model: Pete Justice

Click here for the full history of the development of our new Captain Justice cartoon.

Interested in Finding out more about NIH s Loan Repayment Programs?
Log onto: http://www.lrp.nih.gov/about/index.htm to find out what NIH is doing to attract health professionals to careers in clinical, pediatric, health disparities, or contraception and infertility research.

nterdisciplinary Research Opportunity: Evolution of Infectious Diseases
In order to stimulate interdisciplinary research between quantitative/computational scientists and life scientists, NIH has re-issued a call for R01 proposals.
