Congratulations to Dr. Ed Hoover for being elected to the prestigious National Academy of Sciences. The Academy was established under a congressional charter signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 and is a private, nonprofit institution which recognizes distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Sarah has been selected to participate in the "Doctor Interns" program, a non-profit organization that takes students on a two week internship to Shree Prannath Hospital in Surat, India. A hearty congratulations to MIP labs for producing a whopping 73 manuscripts that appeared on Pub Med between February and June of this year! With so many great papers out there in the literature, how can we highlight just one in this belated MIPnews issue? Thus here’s a brief description of four noteworthy papers that appeared this Spring. Frankly we wish there was space to highlight at least half a dozen more……

Development of an in vitro model of acquired resistance to toceranib phosphate (Palladia®) in canine mast cell tumor.

When you are trying to understand and eventually cure dog mast cell tumors – the most common neoplasms in the canine planet – your toolbox can never be big enough. Drugs that target the Kit tyrosine kinase have been approved to treat these tumors, but the development of resistance in the tumor cells being treated is a common problem that ultimately leads to adverse clinical outcomes. In this collaborative study, MIP and CS researchers have developed a mast cell tumor line that mimics a drug-resistant mast cell tumor. This novel reagent should help researchers not only understand drug resistance mechanisms, but also may serve as a tool in the investigation of ways to treat KIT inhibitor-resistant tumors in our furry friends.

This paper provides on the latest update on the use of trisubstituted benzimidazoles as a platform to develop a novel class of drugs to combat M. tuberculosis infections. By exploiting structure-activity relationships, Ric and the gang have come up with a new lead compound that can reduce mycobacterial replication in the lungs. In other words, the Mtb infected mice in the study breathed a ‘sigh of relief’ – and hopefully this and/or related compounds will continue to perform well along the many steps in the drug development pipeline.

Quinacrine promotes replication and conformational mutation of chronic wasting disease prions.

Developing drugs to treat prion diseases has been a frustrating experience to say the least. The drug quinacrine was in clinical development for the better part of a decade before it was determined that it simply didn’t work as advertised. In this study, Glenn and the lab closely examined the effect of this drug on prions and found that quinacrine appears to force the prion protein into a specific conformation that can actually increase the multiplication rate for certain prion agents/strains rather than reduce it. This observation provides extremely valuable information to instruct how anti-prion drugs should be screened. Since prion drug discovery, like much of laboratory science, is only as good/successful as the quality of the assay used in the experiment, the results in this study may be a very powerful wake up call.

In this collaborative study that grew out of interactions at a meeting of the Rocky Mountain Virology Club in Pingree Park, the Kieft lab has solved a very unique structure in the flavivirus genomic RNA that blocks and ultimately represses a major exonuclease involved in cellular mRNA decay. The repression of this enzyme by the RNA structure stabilizes viral RNA and significantly dysregulates cellular gene expression which may contribute to viral-induced cytopathology. This fascinating knot-like structure (which made the cover of the 2014 RNA Society Meeting abstract book) is a very attractive drug target and opens the door for a detailed molecular understanding of an understudied area of virus-host interaction.

MIP hosted a very large (~1,400 attendees) and very successful meeting of the American Society for Virology last month. The meeting boasted a record number of scientific workshops (56) along with morning plenary sessions, state-of-the art lectures, lunch time workshops special topic/discussion tables, poster sessions and a keynote address by Nobel laureate David Baltimore. With ~300 international attendees from ~40 countries, the meeting truly had a global flavor.
In addition to the outstanding science, the meeting attendees had a bit of fun as well. Two22 Brewery from Centennial developed and brewed a special craft beer for the occasion which we called ‘Hopatitis Ale’. Tuesday night entertainment in the social tent (before it was cut short by the violent hail storm in the area….) was provided by the terrific local alternative country rock band the Patti Fiasco.
Special thanks to Jeff Wilusz, the lead on site organizer of the conference, Olve Peersen (Biochemistry) who played a major role in the meeting (including website maintenance and AV coordination) and other members of the MIP faculty planning committee (Sandy Quackenbush, Joel Rovnak, Brian Geiss, Tony Shountz, Rushika Perera, Carol Blair, Greg Ebel and Ken Olson) who’s tireless and effective efforts were key to making this one of the best ASV meetings ever. The real key, however, to pulling off this meeting though were the 65 amazing, hard-working student/postdoc/RA/RS/admin coordinator volunteers that truly made everything work as planned. Working with these guys is a true honor.
A big thank you also goes out to CSU entities that worked the event. These include Elodie Vigneron and Conf Services, CVMBS IT (including Erin Napier who originally designed the terrific ASV2014 website), LSC Catering, Jason Rogien and the LSC AV crew, Allen Sneesby and Classroom Services, Housing and Dining, TILT staff, CSU Warehouse Staff, CSUPD, CSU motor pool, and countless others who worked behind the scenes.
Lastly we’d like to thank all of our local sponsors that truly helped make the meeting special. These include the Hilton Hotel who did an amazing job hosting the plenary sessions and the banquet, and several local breweries - Black Bottle, Two22 and Fort Collins Brewery - for providing beverages for the social tent (the quality of which attendees are still raving about). There is little doubt that meeting attendees left Northern Colorado with a terrific impression of our fair city and its top-notch businesses.

A celebration to honor Dr. Barry Beaty and Dr. Patrick Brennan was held on April 2, 2014 at the Foothills Research Innovation Center. Dr. Beaty and Dr. Brennan were recognized for their outstanding acheivements and exemplary service to CSU. We hope they are both enjoying their partial retirement!

In April, the Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association (SCAVMA) hosted the first annual FAC dodgeball tournament. The stakes were high as teams competed for best costume and the coveted "Champion of the Universe" trophy. In the end the "Bottom Quartile" defeated "The Sitting Ducks" to take home the trophy and "Prognosis: Grave" won for best costume. The tournament also settled an ancient rivalry between pathology and surgery. In what was called the "Balls of Truth Showdown" EJ Ehrhart's team,"Large Knives", defeated Felix Duerr's team, "Small Knives".

Micro major, Andy Bender loves science, but he has another passion too. Andy is a DJ for KCSU, Colorado State University’s non-commercial, student-run, campus radio station. KCSU focuses on college and alternative musical genres but also provides newscasts, sports updates, a public affairs talk show and Public Service Announcements. Right now Andy and his co-host, Jacqui Maes, have a two hour show from 11:00 pm to 1:00 am where they play "relaxed electronic/study music". They are hoping to get a more accessible time slot over the summer. Check out the live stream and tune into Andy during those late night study sessions!

Thirteen prospective MIP graduate students visited the CSU campus in February; one candidate visited on Monday, Feb 24th, and twelve visited on Friday, Feb 28nd. Both groups were given an overview of the Graduate program from Dr. Quackenbush, received tours of the Foothills facilities, met with the GEC, and met with individual faculty whose research programs were of interest to them. The students who visited on Friday were able to attend the CMB/MCIN/BMB/MIP Poster Symposium and then enjoyed a FAC with faculty and the Graduate Student Organization at Tap & Handle. Saturday morning, due to weather conditions, and after scraping ice off the vehicle windows they headed to Lory State Park to hike Arthur's Rock with Drs. Blair, Black, Quackenbush, Rovnak and Schountz. View more photos from the hike.

Micro Major, Samantha Guinn, wins the 2014-15 ASCSU Presidential Election

Samantha Guinn, a junior microbiolgoy major is the new president of ASCSU. Samantha and her running mate, Lance Li Puma, beat out three other campaigns with 1,484 votes. Their campaign "Fresh Approach, New Beginnings, focused on four separate platforms. Congratulations Samantha and Lance!

In April, MIP students enrolled in the Plan B masters and PhD programs had the opportunity to attend a career workshop. The event was held in the D-lab atrium of the South campus and featured four invited speakers. Rob Yemm from Leprino Foods; Dan Stinchcomb, founder of Inviragen; Ann Powers from the CDC and Dennis Pierro, Director of BioMARC. The goal was to highlight possible career choices in microbiology/biotech/food industry. Each of the speakers gave a short presentation about careers in their areas, and also talked about their own career experiences to help the students. The presentations were followed by a panel discussion based on the students' questions.

Good food, good beer and good people were all part of the MIP Annual Spring Picnic on Friday, May 9. MIPers and their families enjoyed Famous Daves BBQ while Greg Dean and Becky Trentlage poured the beer.

Dr. John Spencer is part of a documentary featuring his research diagnosing leprosy in Breves, Brazil. The documentary was produced with funding from the Brazil Ministry of Health and shadows a team as they vist homes and schools in the Amazon of Brazil. Be sure to check out the video on youtube!

Funding for Publication Costs

The Colorado State University Libraries has allocated $45,000 to establish the Open Access Research & Scholarship (OARS) Fund. CSU tenured/tenure track faculty authors are eligible to receive up to $2,000 to support article processing fees for one article. The 2013-2014 academic year application period for OARS funding closed May 31, however, the website indicates OARS will be accepting applications again in mid-July. Please email michelle.wilde@colostate.edu if you would like to be notified when the program begins accepting applications again.

Jordan's video answered the question how is your microbiology making the world a better place? Jordan will receive a $100 cash prize and free registration to the ASM general meeting.
