The Zeiss LSM Meta 510 is a laser scanning confocal system integrated with an Axio Observer Z1 microscope. The use of finely tuned lasers allows for excitation at defined wavelengths, helping to eliminate background and bleeding from other channels. The filter system allows for fine tuned fluorescent analysis of various fluorophores, limiting the emission collection to specific desired ranges. Another major advantage the laser scanning confocal offers over standard light microscopes is the ability to take 4 dimensional images. In addition to standard XY images, the confocal is able to gather images from different Z-planes and compile them into a single 3 dimensional Z-stack. Three dimensional Z-stack images may also be aquired over time to create a 3 dimensional time lapse. Several common applications of the laser scanning confocal are imaging of fluorescent markers, cellular localization, 3D tissue modeling, FRET analysis, and ratio imaging (in conjunction with metamorph or another software).

Getting Started as a Regular User

Regular users are those who have been trained on the use of the Zeiss Axio Observer Microscope and associated LSM 510 META confocal equipment. Only after approval by the owner and opperator of this Zeiss Confocal can one become a fully approved user, with unassisted access to the microscope. More information on how to get started as a regular user to come...... please contact Mercedes Gonzalez-Juarerro or Eric Lee if you wish to be trained as a regular user.
