International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management

Notes From IVAPM Update @ VMAAC – April 2005

8:00 – 10:15 AM 24 April

Background and current status

Charge - - to encourage adequate and appropriate treatment of animal pain and improve our ability to recognize it

Goal - - to develop guidelines/standards of care in pain treatment

Developed - - because pain remains a huge unmet need

Update of where we've been - -

Handed out newest brochure – available for distribution

1 st official CE meeting in conjunction w/ ACVA in Phoenix in October 2004

ACVA BOD indicates interest in linking w/ IVAPM for meetings on a cycle yet to be determined

Now a legal entity w/ dues required

VAA is official journal

Current status and ongoing issues - -

Credentialing committee

Robin – Draft document modeled after AAPM

Committee to meet 28-29 July in N.C. to hash out remaining details

1 st credentialing examination in 2006

2 levels of membership - - regular and credentialed

No “grandfathering”

Question – Bill Muir

“How do we deal w/ people we want in the organization who might not otherwise join eg Tony Yaksh? They might be a way to promote the organization, spread the word, and otherwise add additional credibility.”

Answer – Robin

This is something that needs to be addressed and hashed out by the BOD. There are people (eg Kathryn Padgett of AAPM) who are assisting the IVAPM and should probably be afforded some sort of recognition or special designation (ed. note - - I don't think this is really an issue of ‘credentialing'). There may be well known pain people who could provide benefit to IVAPM via their affiliation, etc.

Comment from room – ACVA and ACLAM (?) has honorary members (or some variation thereof).

R – Exam in -06 means questions will be solicited. Be thinking about what qualifications people should have and what skill sets they need in order to achieve designation as credentialed in pain management.

Comment – Bill Muir

Be sure to offer VERY specific criteria for question-writing. Want questions w/ only 1 answer.

Comment – Karen Cunningham (Merial)

ABVP dips can re-credential by writing exam questions - - they require a day-long course to prepare people for writing exam questions.

R – Some fee will be involved in credentialing. We anticipate 3 rd party involved (eg testing company) to improve credibility. Also, we anticipate creating a way for the examination to be administered online. No legal problems w/ the credentialing process. The specialty college option remains on a 5 – 10 year time line and will be modeled after the ABVP. Planning for 100 multiple choice questions w/ 2 hours to finish. Reviewed draft document from the Credentialing committee with the room (not in very great detail).

Comment – several participants

“25 hours per year appears to be excessive - - particularly for veterinary nurses.”

“ACLAM dips need 400 hours over 8 years and get credit for publishing as well as presenting lectures, in addition to attending CE. Perhaps one strategy is to develop and offer online CE opportunities. We need to accommodate people who can't get away and travel to CE, as well as attending to international members. Also, please clarify whether preparing and delivering lectures will count as CE.”

From Kurt Grimm - - “I have had a pain course online for past several years and can provide feedback on how to (and not to) make it successful.”

Student chapters

Robin – 3 student chapters, currently - - Penn, CSU, Cornell . The challenge - - providing mentoring to assist in getting other chapters up and running. Clearly the students need to do the “heavy lifting”, but if you are involved in an academic institution, now is the time to lend a hand. Our future resides in recruiting students.

Student case study of the month

Robin – This is open to students and techs. The 1 st case is currently under review. There is a $100 honorarium for incentive if a case report is accepted.

IVAPM Preceptorships

Robin – This program allows students the opportunity to participate with people doing pain medicine no matter what their working scenario. I have forms with me, you can e-mail Tara , or go to the website. We need preceptorship sites!

Website

Robin – We NEED submissions, information, references, etc. for the website! The public section now has the video “Is Your Pet in Pain?” The members-only section has a new chapter each month from Dr. Short 's pain management curriculum.

Comment – Bill Muir

“What about providing a link to or modeling after the resources found at www.VASG.org ?” (Veterinary Anaesthesia Support Group) This site has references and information on meds, literature citations, etc.”

Newsletter

Robin – The next newsletter will go out in early June. Bonnie Wright is putting it together right now and really needs submissions. Send info to Tara or Bonnie or Robin - - accolades, recent articles of interest, etc.

Aside

Robin – Showed off supplement to Vet. Med. On 10 most amazing changes in vet med in the past 100 years - - anaesthesia and pain management made the top 10!

Upcoming meetings

Robin – We will meet in July of 2005 in conjunction w/ the AVMA and WVC in Minneapolis . In 2006 we will meet in Brazil w/ the WCVA. In 2007 we will meet w/ 2 other organizations in Montreal .

ACVA has their meeting scheduled for October 2006 in Minneapolis (after Brazil ). Should IVAPM think about a linkage to that meeting for those members who cannot get to Brazil ?

Comment – Bill Muir

The IVAPM needs to stay as connected to practitioners as much as possible. This really may require affiliation with ONE national meeting, and then growing the IVAPM's presence at that single meeting. In other words, to create a branded presence at whatever meeting that is so that everyone and anyone would know that the IVAPM has it's meeting there. One suggestion is TNAVC.”

Comment – Lois

“That way the meeting would be the same time every year.”

General comments – participants

The organization will do best w/ a single meeting each year and perhaps a “presence” in other venues. Perhaps the “Pain Forum” is one way to publicize and promote it…

What about the opportunity to have lectures taped and available for members unable to attend that particular meeting or session? IVAPM could then sell the tapes to members providing income as well as additional CE opportunities.

Something to investigate - -

How could we go about getting access to the recordings that are typically made at meetings by the various recording companies out there? What about copyright issues, etc?

Summary – Robin

So, our charge beyond 2007 may be to create an affiliation with a big meeting in order to get a toehold and begin building brand essence and a consistent presence. In addition, we need to explore ways to create “satellite” meetings in various countries around the world that would be managed by individuals in those countries (in other words, no fiscal liability for the IVAPM itself).

Bylaws and election update

Advisory board

R – Robin and Mark Epstein are working on this. We are again using the AAPM as our model. We are looking for diversity and depth in the representation. If you would like to participate or can think of someone who should be included, let Robin know (soon!).

Future directions?

Comments – participants

What about seminars brought to various countries by members or utilizing liaisons in each country? The goal would be to bring pain management information and tools to the practitioner in their own language.

Are we linked to veterinarian publications - - eg the “popular press”(DVM Newsmagazine, Veterinary Economics, Veterinary Forum, etc.)?

How can we create a presence in other journals? Editorials, etc.?

What about a “Pain Case of the Month” in JAVMA?

Comments about creating a presence in the journal “Lab Animal” (They said “It goes everywhere…”).

Comments about IVIS (International Veterinary Information Service ( www.ivis.org ) as an online information site that may be willing to help us get information out.

What about linkage to foreign journals?

Many thanks to Lois for acting as “scribe”.
