Mission Statement
"The International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management is a
multi-disciplinary organization that seeks to promote the
acquisition and dissemination of knowledge related to the biology
and clinical treatment of pain in animals. Stakeholders in this
process include a wide cross-section of individuals. The Academy
seeks to: provide forums for communication among all interested
parties of knowledge concerning the biology and treatment of animal
pain, provide continuing education in the area of pain recognition
and treatment, and establish a process whereby veterinarians with a
special interest in the area of animal pain management can meet a
set of prescribed objectives that will ultimately lead to
certification as a specialist in the management of animal pain.
Finally, the Academy seeks to promote humane, scientific
investigation into the biology of animal pain and the assessment of
the efficacy of defined treatment modalities."
Visions
- To accomplish the mission with a multi- and inter-disciplinary approach, based on a foundation of ethics, scientific evidence, and clinical experience.
- To become the recognized leading forum and resource for the veterinary profession in the identification, prevention, and relief of pain in animals.
- To facilitate the development of practice focusing on the management of pain in animals.
Goals
- Provide for the Credentialing of expertise, advanced training, and specialists in the field of animal pain management.
- Provide superior Continuing Education on the latest research in, and clinical applications of,
the recognition, prevention, and relief of pain in animals.
- Provide an internet-based forum for ongoing dialogue and dispensation of information on topics relative to the control of pain in animals.
- Develop guidelines for pain management in animals.
- Develop guidelines for hospice care in animals (the Task Force notes that the aspect of managing and providing comfort during the end-is-approaching time of an animal's life is emerging in its significance and application, and while there are several good programs currently in existence, IVAPM has a unique opportunity to provide industry-wide guidance on this important matter).
- Develop and implement strategies for widest possible exposure of the organization and its resources; to recruit participants in the delivery of superior, multi-modal approaches to the management of pain in animals.
- Leverage and be responsible to the organization's membership.
- Create collaborative relationships with allied veterinary medical and human-health related organizations and agencies.
- Create and implement a financial plan that permits the timely success of all stated goals and objectives.
