Dear Friends,
Activity on the Colorado State University campus is reaching fever pitch in anticipation of the start of the new academic year on Aug. 23. Crews are cleaning and repairing, construction work is being completed under tight deadlines, and the bookstore is restocking its shelves. In two more weeks, campus sidewalks and streets will be filled once again with wide-eyed freshman, returning upperclassmen, and the ebb and flow of students into and out of classrooms.
I’d like to welcome back our returning undergraduate, graduate and professional students, as well as take this opportunity to welcome our new students who are coming to campus for the first time. I encourage you to take full advantage of the rich educational opportunities at CSU, and please know that the CVMBS faculty, staff, and your fellow students are here to provide guidance and support.
I look forward to meeting our new students during the College’s student orientation sessions and other welcoming celebrations – I’ll be participating in seven different orientations – culminating with the Vet Fest barbecue on Aug. 28. It is always a great pleasure to meet with our new students and have the opportunity to learn about their dreams and aspirations.
In July, I met with some of our former graduates, the DVM Class of 1985, who were celebrating their 25-year reunion in Breckenridge. I discussed with them the establishment of an endowed class scholarship, and enjoyed bringing them up to date on College accomplishments and future directions. From July 31-Aug. 3, I attended the American Veterinary Medical Association convention, during which the College held an alumni reception. On Aug. 4, I was able to attend the dedication of the new CSU Denver Center. On Aug. 5, I met with the Colorado State Board of Veterinary Medicine to discuss license procedures for veterinarians in Colorado.
On Aug. 13, the College will be hosting a delegation from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Gifu University, Japan, and the Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, Japan. During the visit, we will be signing a new International Memorandum of Understanding to build upon an IMOU signed in 2008. Delegation representatives and representatives from the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences also will discuss innovative collaborative educational programs, joint research in cancer biology and infectious disease, and an international open laboratory. I look forward to their visit and the opportunity to continue to build on an already strong and mutually beneficial relationship.
Once again, welcome to Colorado State University, and, a quick piece of advice. If you are already on campus and still need to get that 2011 parking permit, I would head over to Parking Services today (their new location is the Lake Street Parking Garage), before the campus population expands by about 25,000 people.
