The Frontiers in Biomedical Sciences Seminar Series is hosting a visit and lecture by Dr. Thomas Cech, Nobel Laureate, on Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 4 p.m., in Yates Hall, Room 104. A reception will follow his lecture.
Dr. Cech is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Colorado; and Director of the Colorado Initiative in Molecular Biotechnology. In 1989, he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry based on his work in ribonucleic acid and its function as a biocatalyst. His lecture topic, “Crawling out of the RNA World: Telomerase and Telomeres,” is especially timely given that the 2009 Nobel Prize in Medicine was given to three researchers for their discovery of how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase.
The Frontiers in Biomedical Sciences Seminar Series was initiated by the Department of Biomedical Sciences in 2003 to sponsor outstanding speakers on leading-edge topics in the biomedical sciences that would appeal to large and diverse audiences. The Series is currently jointly sponsored by the Department of Biomedical Sciences; the Program in Molecular, Cellular and Integrative Neuroscience; and the Cell and Molecular Biology Program at Colorado State University.
