The College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences will kick off its back-to-school orientation student activities on Thursday, Aug. 12, with more than a week of orientations, luncheons, and ceremonies.
This fall, the College will welcome 139 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students. This includes four students in the MBA/DVM combined program, four students in the MSPH/DVM combined program, two students in the DVM/PhD program, and five students in the Food Animal Veterinary Career Incentive Program. As of Aug. 5, the College has 131 confirmed new freshman and 29 new transfer students for CVMBS undergraduate programs in the Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences; Department of Biomedical Sciences; and Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology. The College also has 136 newly admitted students to its non-DVM graduate programs.
This year marks the fourth week-long orientation for Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students. The College expanded orientation in 2007 to include three days of activities at Colorado State’s Pingree Park mountain campus. The three-day retreat is designed to introduce and reinforce ideas of professionalism, communication, leadership, and team building among the DVM students.
Highlights of the DVM week include a welcome on Monday from Dr. Lance Perryman, Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, and the Oath and Passages Ceremony which takes place on Friday. During the ceremony, incoming freshman DVM students receive their lab coats, sign the Code of Honor for DVM students, and participate in a non-binding recitation of the Veterinarian’s Oath, signifying their membership in the DVM Class of 2014. The students also will be treated to lunches provided by SCAVMA and Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Inc., before heading to Pingree Park on Tuesday.
Additional orientations include:
On Friday, Aug. 20, the College will welcome its entering freshman class, adult and veteran students, and transfer students during Ram Welcome: Experience CSU. Ram Welcome is a four-day program from Aug. 19-22 that allows students to explore academic programs, meet faculty and staff members, learn about the many services available on campus, connect with new and current students, and begin to learn the traditions of Colorado State University. A picnic on Thursday night, following the University Welcome at Moby Arena, kicks off the celebration.
