CVMBS Welcomes New Faculty, Staff and Postdoctoral Fellows

Laurie FonkenLaurie Fonken, PhD
Department of Clinical Sciences

Laurie Fonken, PhD, has joined the Department of Clinical Sciences as a counselor. She will be working with Dr. Lori Kogan to help counsel veterinary students in personal, social and academic areas of need. Dr. Fonken is a Licensed Professional Counselor and has worked in private practice, institutions of higher education, and various treatment facilities for more than 20 years. She completed her PhD in Education at Colorado State, with an emphasis in Counseling and Student Affairs in Higher Education.

Dr. Fonken works closely with the Department of Clinical Sciences, the Dean’s office and Dr. Kogan to coordinate counseling services and education efforts for PVM students, faculty and staff.

Dr. Jeremy Hubert
Department of Clinical Sciences
 
Dr. Jeremy Hubert joined the Equine Hospital in November as a faculty member and clinician, specializing in equine lameness and surgery. A board-certified surgeon, Dr. Hubert provides expertise in lameness and associated orthopedic surgery, upper respiratory tract diseases as well as laparoscopy.

Born in Wales, Dr. Hubert was raised on a family ranch in Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia), and graduated from the University of Zimbabwe, Faculty of Veterinary Science, in 1993. He has practiced veterinary medicine around the world including in Zimbabwe, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In 2000, Dr. Hubert completed his master’s degree and an equine surgical residency at Louisiana State University (LSU). He joined the faculty at LSU in 2000 as a clinical instructor and later served as an Associate Professor of Equine Surgery through 2007.

Most recently, he has spent some time working on his family ranch in Zimbabwe and assisting in the equine clinic as a Visiting Professor of Equine Surgery at Ondesterpoort, University of Pretoria, South Africa.  

Dr. Fausto Bellezzo
Department of Clinical Sciences

Dr. Fausto Bellezzo joined the Equine Hospital staff in August of 2008 as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Equine Emergency Surgery and Critical Care. He obtained his DVM at the Federal University of Vicosa, Brazil. After working for three years as a racetrack veterinarian in Sao Paulo, Dr. Bellezzo came to the United States and completed a surgery internship at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Ky.

He completed three years of large animal surgical residency at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, and held a position as equine clinician and emergency surgeon for two years at Iowa State University.

Eva Rozsa
Department of Biomedical Sciences

Eva Rozsa joined the laboratory of Dr. Jozsef Vigh last fall as a research fellow. She comes to Colorado State from Hungary and the University of Szeged; Department of Physiology, Anatomy, and Neuroscience. She is conducting research in the field of visual neuroscience.

Pankaj Kumar
Department of Biomedical Sciences

Pankaj Kumar joined the laboratory of Dr. Stuart Tobet last fall as a postdoctoral research associate, coming to Colorado State University from India.
