The Office of the Vice President for Research and the Colorado State University Research Foundation are sponsoring the Zoonotic Disease Research Colloquium, Oct. 30-31, at the Hilton Hotel in Fort Collins.
Zoonotic diseases represent one of the leading causes of illness and death from infectious disease. Zoonoses are those diseases and infections that are naturally transmitted between vertebrate animals and humans with or without an arthropod intermediate. Worldwide, zoonotic diseases have a negative impact on commerce, travel, and economies. In most developing countries, zoonotic diseases are among those diseases that contribute significantly to an already overly burdened public health system. Zoonotic diseases include rabies, leptospirosis, anthrax, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, plague, West Nile virus, brucellosis, and many other important diseases.
Research, collaboration and new technology all aid in finding answers to questions of zoonotic disease mechanisms and targets; as well as aid in the development of vaccines, new diagnostic tools and therapeutics. The goal of the Zoonotic Disease Research Colloquium is to build upon investigator-initiated collaborations in a single forum. The colloquium will provide an overview of the myriad of zoonotic research activities along the Northern Front Range; stimulate discussion among investigators; and foster new collaborations.
