Dear Friends,
In September, I had the honor and privilege of attending the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association’s annual meeting held this year in beautiful Keystone in the Rocky Mountains. While there, I had the occasion to attend the class reunions of the DVM Classes of 1981 and 1971 and speak with our alumni about the state of affairs at the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. I also was able to meet more informally with members of the DVM Classes of 1966 and 1986.
During the conference, I participated in the “Future Directions in Veterinary Medicine” panel discussion with Dr. Roger Mahr, President of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), and Dr. Howard Rubin, Executive Director of the National Committee on Veterinary Economic Issues (NCVEI). The panel discussion gave Dr. Mahr and me the chance to become better acquainted and to set the stage for our work together on Oct. 4 at the AAVMC (Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges)/AVMA joint executive board meeting to be held in Washington, D.C. There, we will discuss opportunities to advance Dr. Mahr’s “One World, One Health, One Medicine” vision, which is fully consistent with the goals and objectives of the AAVMC and of our own College.On Oct. 10 and 11, I’ll be in Chicago for the NCVEI executive board meeting, where we will be discussing how to improve veterinary economic issues for the profession.
During the weekend of Oct. 5, 6 and 7, Colorado State will be celebrating homecoming. On Thursday, Oct. 5, the College will host a dinner for our “Golden Grads,” members of the DVM Class 1956 and earlier. On Friday, these esteemed graduates will be given a tour of the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) and learn more about the College’s current activities in research, teaching and outreach. A few other important dates include Oct. 27, when the University hosts the 1870 Dinner to honor donors, and Oct. 30 and 31, when the University hosts the Zoonotic Disease Research Symposium (see related article).
The Faculty/Staff Fall Meeting will be held Tuesday, Oct. 24, 4:15 p.m., at the Hilton Hotel. I’ll be giving an update on the state of the College, and we’ll also be learning more about plans for the College’s centennial celebration in 2007. A special thanks to the centennial planning committee for the work they are doing to ensure that the celebration is a success. Centennial celebration committee members are Janice Brown, Courtney Comer, JoEllen Linderer, Paul Maffey, Debby Morehead (Chair), and student intern Amanda Douglass.
Finally, I’d like to give an update on the search for a new director of the VTH. We have interviewed one candidate and will interview three additional candidates this month. The candidates are Dr. Grant Frazer, The Ohio State University; Dr. Daniel Smeak, The Ohio State University; Dr. Nathaniel White, Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine; and Dr. David Wilson, University of Missouri.
October will be a busy month for the College, and I look forward to seeing you at some of our many planned activities.
