CVMBS Students Receive Scholarships to Attend Lab Course

Charles River Laboratories has selected three Professional Veterinary Medical students from the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences to receive scholarships to the 20th Annual Charles River Short Course on Laboratory Animals on June 12-15 in Newton, Mass.

Nathan Tong, Class of 2007, and Eric Hutchinson and Whitney Miller, Class of 2008, received all three of the scholarships sponsored by Charles River Laboratories. The scholarships include registration, lodging, meals and travel expenses.

"I think it is quite unusual for three students from one school to receive the awards," said Dr. Sue VandeWoude, an Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology, and student advisor. "This is an intensive, five-day course that has seminars on many topics relevant to lab animal medicine. The scholarships cover all expenses for the course, which is attended by many of the top practitioners in the field."

Course topics include such areas as: the biology and medicine of common laboratory animals and non-traditional species; anesthesia and analgesia; genetics and phenotyping; various aspects of animal facility management; and more.
