Joseph Garcia Named New President of Colorado State University - Pueblo

Joseph GarciaChancellor Larry Edward Penley and the Board of Governors of the Colorado State University System have announced that Joseph Garcia, a Harvard-trained lawyer with extensive public service in southern Colorado, will be the new president of Colorado State University-Pueblo. Garcia has served as president of Pikes Peak Community College since 2001.

"CSU-Pueblo plays a critical role for the State of Colorado with excellent learning opportunities for students and a significant responsibility for economic development and the quality of life of Southern Colorado," said President Penley. "Joe Garcia's experience in the private and public sectors, combined with his knowledge of the community and his distinguished track record as president of Pikes Peak Community College, make him an excellent fit for this important position."

At Pikes Peak, Garcia oversees three campuses that serve about 16,000 students annually through associate's degree programs, business training workshops or continuing education programs. He effectively oversaw the successful re-accreditation process by the Higher Learning Commission in 2003. He previously worked as the Rocky Mountain States representative for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, executive director of the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies and as a partner in the Colorado Springs office of law firm Holme Roberts & Owen. He obtained his law degree from Harvard Law School and his bachelor's degree in business from the University of Colorado-Boulder.

Denver Businessman Appointed Vice Chairman of University Board of Governors

Douglas JonesDouglas L. Jones, president and owner of The JONES Realty Group, has been elected Vice Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Colorado State University System.

Jones is in the middle of a four-year term on the governing board that oversees Colorado State University and Colorado State University-Pueblo

"Doug is a highly valued board member who is actively engaged in serving faculty, staff and students at the University, as well as the residents of Colorado," said Larry Edward Penley, Chancellor of the Colorado State system. "On every board Doug serves, time and time again, he makes a difference - his service has always resulted in action. Doug's business acumen and dedication have been extremely helpful as we confront the complexities facing higher education in Colorado."

Jones has been involved in the real estate business in Colorado for nearly three decades. He said he wants measurable results - in his business and at the University.

"As one of the few land-grant institutions in the country, Colorado State has a significant role in economic development," Jones said. "We want to share the values and excellence of Colorado State University with the rest of the world and, at the same time, make sure we provide great opportunities for the young people in Colorado."

Colorado State University's Ag Day Celebrates 25 Years Sept. 2

Colorado State University 's annual Ag Day barbecue celebrates its 25th year from noon-2:15 p.m, Saturday, Sept. 2, before the 3 p.m. kickoff of the Rams' first 2006 home football game against the Weber State University Wildcats.

The Ag Day barbecue, a 25-year-old tradition that honors the University's heritage, features Colorado fare such as turkey, lamb, beef, pork, beans, potatoes, corn on the cob, apples, ice cream, wheat bread, melons, milk, pop, water and beer brewed with barley raised by Colorado farmers. The event takes place in the south parking lot at Hughes Stadium on Overland Trail between Drake and Prospect roads. Tickets for the Ag Day barbeque are $15 or $35 for both a barbecue and game ticket, and are available at (970) 491-6497.
