Annual Biology of Disease Vectors Course Heads to Liverpool

The 17th Annual Biology of Disease Vectors Course will be delivered at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, University of Liverpool, England, from July 16 to 28. Approximately 30 students and 25 faculty members will participate in the course.

Biology of Disease Vectors is an intensive two-week residential course in vector molecular biology, and is designed to introduce post-doctoral and a select number of pre-doctoral scientists to the most current issues in vector molecular biology. Students in the course come from many different countries - in a typical year 16 or more countries are represented. The program has trained more than 550 students from 54 countries during the 16 years it has been in operation. In addition, the course has led to many scientific collaborations and the publication of the first comprehensive book on molecular vector biology "Biology of Disease Vectors."

The course is held at Colorado State University and, every other year, in a disease-endemic country. Overseas sites have included Greece, Brazil, Mali, the Czech Republic, Mexico and Thailand.

The course is sponsored by the Wellcome Trust, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases. Additional information on the course can be found at http://www.cvmbs.colostate.edu/mip/bdv/
