RCE Sponsors Bioterrorism and Emerging Infections Conference 2006

The Rocky Mountain Regional Center of Excellence (RCE) is sponsoring its first in a series of educational conferences designed to provide basic science andRMRCE logo clinical information to RCE participants and their laboratory/research personnel. The conference will first be presented in Fort Collins, Jan. 17-18, at the Hilton Hotel. The second presentation will be Jan. 19-20 at The Children's Hospital in Denver. Similar conferences will be presented in the spring in Bozeman, Mont., and Salt Lake City, Utah.

On Day 1, the lecture series will focuseon agents of bioterrorism and emerging infections. Topics include basic principles of bioterrorism and epidemiology, smallpox, plague, avian influenza and other zoonotic diseases, veterinary/agricultural response to avian influenza, and Burkholderia. Day 2 will focus on infectious agent handling. Topics include Biosafety 101, understanding the "magic" of biosafety cabinets, select agent research do's and don'ts, and "I may have been exposed in the lab. Now what do I do?"
