Departmental and Program Seminar Calendar for January 2004

The Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology
The Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology (MIP) sponsors a series of weekly faculty seminars. The seminars are held on Mondays, 4:10-5:10 p.m., in Room 103 of the Pathology Building. Coordinator for the series is Dr. Leonard Pearson. Committee members include Drs. James DeMartini and Dean Crick. Jan. 24 – Dr. Herbert Schweizer, Associate Head for Graduate Education and Research Professor; Bacterial Physiology; Antimicrobial Resistance, MIP. Dr. Schweizer’s discussion is titled, “Efflux Mediated Resistance in Bacteria and its Impact on Drug Discovery Efforts.”

Jan. 31 – Dr. Alexander Franz, Post-Doctoral Fellow, with Dr. Ken Olson, MIP. Dr. Franz’s discussion is titled, “Developing RNAi-Based Transgenic Resistance Against Dengue Virus in Aedes aegypti.”

Feb. 7 – Dr. Dick Bowen, Professor; Infectious Disease and Reproductive Physiology, Department of Biomedical Sciences. Dr. Bowen presents a lecture titled, “All Creatures Great and Small Get Infected with West Nile Virus.”

Jan. 12 – Dr. Rajesh Agarwal, Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Dr. Agarwal will present, “Molecular Mechanism of Skin Cancer Prevention by an Antioxidant Flavonoid Silibinin.”

Feb. 3 – Dr. Roula Barhoumi Mouneimne, Texas A&M University. Dr. Mouneimne will present, “Use of Mathematical Modeling to Decode Oscillations in Human Myometical Cells.”

Jan. 19 – Dr. Gary Strichartz, Pain Research Center, Department of Anesthesia, Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Strichartz will present a lecture titled, “Uncovering New Mechanisms in Post-Operative Pain: Novel Targets and Potential Therapeutics.”

Feb. 2 – Dr. Thomas Sutula, Department of Neurology, University of Wisconsin Hospital, topic to be announced.

Feb. 9 – Dr. William Betz, Department of Physiology and Biophysics, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, topic to be announced.

 Jan. 27 – Dr. Fuller Bazer, Associate Dean for Agriculture, Texas A&M University, presents a lecture titled, “Role of Interferon – Tau in the Establishment and Maintenance of Pregnancy.” Lecture will be at 4:30 p.m., W104 ARBL, Foothills Campus.
