Faculty Honors and Awards
● Dr. Pete Hellyer has received the 2003 Langley Award, a prize
for the best article published in the Journal of Veterinary Anaesthesia
and Analgesia. The article was “Comparison of opioid and alpha-2
adrenergic receptor binding in horse and dog brain using radioligand
autoradiography.” Dr. Hellyer, an Associate Professor in the Department
of Clinical Sciences and co-director of the Center for Comparative Pain
Medicine, is internationally recognized for his progressive work in the
treatment of pain in animals.
● Dr. Ramesh K. Akkina has accepted an invitation to serve a one-year
term as chairperson of the AIDS Discovery and Development of Therapeutics
Study Section, Center for Scientific Review. Dr. Akkina was selected
on the basis of his demonstrated competence and achievement in his scientific
discipline as evidenced by the quality of research accomplishments, publications
in scientific journals, and other significant scientific activities,
achievements and honors. Dr. Akkina’s most recent research work
has focused on creating HIV-resistant human immune system cells that
have the promise of leading to new and potent treatments for HIV infection.
