New College Leadership Team in Place
When Dr. James Voss retired in 2001, changes had been set in motion to
transform the very foundations of the College, as well as bring in a new
management team to take over leadership roles in the new departments and
at the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The new departments
are now in place (Department of Clinical Sciences; Department of Environmental
and Radiological Health Sciences; Department of Microbiology, Immunology,
and Pathology; and Department of Biomedical Sciences). Dr. Lance Perryman
took over as dean of the College and we now have four new department heads
and a new hospital director. A more in-depth interview with each of our
new leaders will appear in the September issue of Insight, but here is
a brief introduction.
-
Dr. Barbara M. Sanborn took over as head of the Department of Biomedical
Sciences in March 2003. Dr. Sanborn studied as an undergraduate at
Hope College in Holland, Mich. She received her masters and doctorate
degrees from Boston University, and postgraduate training in the departments
of biochemistry at Brandeis University and the University of Iowa,
and the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa.
She has had academic appointments at the University of Texas Medical
School in Houston, and the University of Texas Health Science Center.
She came to CSU from the University of Texas where she most recently
was a member of the faculty at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences
and a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive
Sciences. Her research interests include molecular aspects of hormone
action and signal transduction, the mechanism of action of relaxin
in the uterus, and the biochemical aspects of androgen action in Sertoli
cells and testicular germ cells.

Dr. John D. Zimbrick joined the College as head of the Department
of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences on June 1. Dr Zimbrick
comes to the College from Purdue University where he was a Professor
of Health Sciences and a member of the Purdue Cancer Center. While
at Purdue, Dr. Zimbrick was responsible for revising the existing
curriculum in radiation science and taught courses in introductory
radiation science, radiotracer theory and instrumentation, and radiation
biology. His most recent research work focused on studies to test
the hypothesis that the spatial distribution of clustered free radicals
in DNA varies as a function of linear energy transfer (LET). Dr. Zimbrick
received his bachelor's degree in physics from Carleton College in
Minnesota, and his master's and doctorate's degrees in radiation biophysics
from the University of Kansas. He completed postgraduate work in subcellular
radiation biology at the University of California - Los Angeles.
-
Dr. Jeffrey Wilusz will join the College on August 1 as head of the
Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology. Dr. Wilusz
comes to the College from the University of Medicine and Dentistry
of New Jersey - New Jersey Medical School, where he is a Professor
in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, as well
as serving as that department's Vice Chair and as Assistant Dean for
the medical school's MD/PhD Program. Dr. Wilusz is a graduate of Rutgers
University (Cook College) in New Jersey where he received a bachelor's
of science degree in animal sciences. He received his PhD in molecular
virology from Duke University and received postdoctoral trainings
at Princeton University, Department of Biology. His major research
interests revolve around the control of gene expression at the post-transcriptional
level. These areas include a biochemical and molecular description
of mechanisms, factors and RNA elements involved in mRNA stability,
polyadenylation signal recognition, and regulated messenger RNA-protein
complexes.

Dr. D. Paul Lunn will join the College on August 15 as head of the
Department of Clinical Sciences. Dr. Lunn originally hails from Great
Britain, but comes to the College from the University of Wisconsin-Madison
School of Veterinary Medicine where he as served as Associate Dean
for Clinical Affairs and Director of the Veterinary Medical Teaching
Hospital. Dr. Lunn received his BVSc from the University of Liverpool
in Great Britain, and his MS (Veterinary Science) from the University
of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1991, he completed his PhD work at the University
of Cambridge, Great Britain. He is a Diplomate, 1992, of the American
College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and a member of the Royal
College of Veterinary Surgeons. Dr. Lunn enjoyed general practice
after interning in Large Animal Medicine and Surgery at Ontario Veterinary
College, and then returned to school in 1985 for his residency. He
continued on with PhD studies at Cambridge and then joined the faculty
in 1991 as an assistant professor in the Department of Medical Sciences,
School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Wisconsin-Madison.
- Dr. David E. Lee became Director of the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching
Hospital on June 1. Dr. Lee comes to CSU from Cornell University's College
of Veterinary Medicine where he was on the faculty and most recently
served as Executive Director of the College's External Affairs and Marketing,
and before that Director of Strategic Planning and Business Development;
previously serving as Assistant Director of the EndocrinologySection/Diagnostic
Laboratory. Dr. Lee also has private practice experience working in
a busy mixed-practice setting in Portland, Maine. Dr. Lee received his
bachelor's degree in animal science, his DVM from the College of Veterinary
Medicine, and his MBA from the Johnson Graduate School of Management,
all located at Cornell University. His current research interests include
studies of veterinary practices and clients to better understand market
segmentation, differentiation, characterization of client preferences,
yield management, and understanding how microeconomic factors affect
veterinary practice.
