Developing Opportunities

The Office of Development would like to recognize and thank the Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery Service at the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital for a job well done. The faculty and staff of the cardiology team provided great service to Deborah Van Dyke King and outstanding care to her dog, Custer. Drs. Christopher Orton and Leigh Griffiths are Custer's veterinarians. Custer is a Labrador retriever who was born with tricuspid dysplasia, a condition that leads to heart failure and eventual death early in life.

After undergoing open heart surgery last year, Custer is doing well and living a normal life with the help of drug therapy. As a result of Custer's exemplary care, Ms. King made a substantial gift to the cardiology team to support the program and the highly specialized services they offer to pet owners. Her first gifts established the Custer Cardiology Fund which supports research into the development of alternative techniques for treating heart-valve problems in dogs. This year, Ms. King made an additional gift to purchase an automated staining system for immunohistochemistry studies at the cardiology research laboratory. The automated system allows researchers to look at the characteristics of cells and heart valves.
