Update from the Dean's Office
It has been a long, hot summer in Fort Collins so we are looking forward
to fall when students and cooler weather will arrive. July is typically
a quiet month on a university campus, and CSU is no exception. July is
when many faculty and staff take vacation or attend professional conferences,
and the campus runs along at a slower pace. Parking is certainly easier
to find!
Summer classes end on August 8, but it won't be too long before students
arrive for the start of the fall semester on August 25. With the students
back, campus will be humming along at full speed. While things have been
calm, there is still a bit of news to report.

Dr. Larry Penley, Colorado State University's new president, took
over the helm on Aug. 1. He spent his first day touring several campus
locations including the Human Performance Clinical/Research Laboratory,
the Agricultural Research Development Center, and the James L. Voss
Veterinary Teaching Hospital. We were honored to host the President
on his first day. The tour at the Hospital featured the Robert H.
and Mary G. Flint Animal Cancer Center, the Gail Holmes Equine Orthopaedic
Research Laboratory, the Critical Care Service, Anesthesia Service,
and the new waiting area. We were able to show Dr. Penley our accomplishments
and explain how research, education and outreach come together at
the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Sarah Haugo, a student in the Professional
Veterinary Medical Program, led Dr. Penley on his tour while many
other faculty, staff and students assisted in providing the President
with an impressive overview of the work being done at the Hospital.

We are pleased to welcome Dr. Jeffrey Wilusz, head of the Department
of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology, and Dr. Paul Lunn, head
of the Department of Clinical Sciences, to the Colorado State University
community. After a trying move, Dr. Wilusz made it to Fort Collins
and settled into his office on Aug. 1. Dr. Lunn will take his new
administrative post on Aug. 15 but has already settled into his new
Fort Collins home. We welcome them and wish them all the best as they
take on the challenges of their new positions.

There is no change in the status of the College's 25-year master
plan. Our next step is to meet with the Board of Governors on August
27 at their Pueblo meeting. With their approval, we will then move
on to the Colorado Commission of Higher Education.

The American Veterinary Medical Association meeting in Denver was
a resounding success with the highest registration in the history
of the association. We were pleased to welcome many of the nation's
veterinarians to our campus with an Open House on Sunday and a stream
of visitors during the entire conference. We also had an outstanding
turn-out at the alumni reception in Denver. It was wonderful to see
so many of our graduates gathered together. Thanks to everyone who
assisted with the Open House, and to all who hosted the many visitors
we had during the week. They were very impressed with our programs
and our wonderful faculty and staff.

Three of our faculty members are featured on the Research and Technology
Transfer web site sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for
Research and Information Technology at Colorado State University and
by the CSU Research Foundation (CSURF). If you haven't had a chance,
check out the in-depth articles on Drs. John Belisle, Clark Billinghurst,
and Edward Hoover. The web site is located at www.rttc.colostate.edu/research.html
