Uterine Torsion

Uterine torsion is when the uterus turns upon itself. When this occurs the calf is unable to enter the cervix and therefore the cow will not enter Stage 2 of labor.

If you notice that the cow has not entered stage 2 labor it is important to determine if there is a problem such as a uterine torsion.

You will need to perform a vaginal exam to determine this.
1. Be sure to wash your hands and put on a clean sleeve (rectal sleeve).
2. Clean the vulva and the surrounding area with soap and warm water.
3. Gently insert your hand into the vulva - if you notice that the vagina is narrow and that     your hand turns when you follow the reproductive tract, the uterus may have twisted and     your veterinarian should be contacted to correct the torsion.
