Supplies Needed

  • Rope to tie the tail (Baling twine works well)
  • Obstetrical chains -
    These are preferred over rope when traction is required because they can be cleaned easily.
  • Handles -
    These should be able to be placed anywhere along the chains and should be cleaned easily.

  • Fetal extractor (calf jack)-
    This can be very useful if used correctly but can also be extremely dangerous if misused.

  • Protective plastic/latex gloves/sleeves -
    Gloves help decrease disease in the animals but also decrease the exposure to diseases that affect the people assisting the delivery.
  • Clean bucket
  • Soap and warm water -
    It is important to keep as clean as possible in order to minimize the introduction of disease causing organisms to the dam and calf.
