Areas of Interest - Radiological Sciences, Radiation Dosimetry, Radiation Biology, Radioisotope Methodology and Radiation Instrumentation

Dr. Zimbrick's research interests center on increasing our understanding of the molecular mechanisms by which radiation produces adverse health effects. In addition, his research programs include the development of new biomarkers and biodosimeters for the detection and quantitation of radiation effects, and drugs for the modification of radiation response through the use of biophysical instrumentation, methodologies, and the tools developed by molecular biologists. He is currently studying the chemical changes produced in human tooth enamel by various types of radiation to determine the usefulness of human teeth as biodosimeters for the measurement of radiation dose in accident and medical applications. He is also conducting a project that seeks to determine how radiation energy that is deposited in small volumes in or very near DNA in living cells produces reactive molecules (free radicals) that lead to small regions of chemically damaged DNA.

Dr. Zimbrick is very interested in the teaching of environmental and radiological sciences, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He has nearly 25 years of experience in teaching courses on the fundamentals of radiological sciences, radiation dosimetry, radiation biology, radioisotope methodology and radiation instrumentation.
