Research Interests

Dr. Steyn serves as staff radiologist and also chief of the nuclear medicine service. He came to Colorado State University as a veterinarian, a staff radiologist and assistant professor in 1989 and initiated and developed the nuclear medicine service that provides scintigraphy support for clinical and research activities in both small and large animals. The nuclear medicine service now includes an outpatient service for diagnostic scintigraphic studies as well as radio-iodine (131I) therapy for cats and dogs that suffer from thyroid disorders. Dr. Steyn is currently also involved in a project using 153Sm to treat bone cancer in dogs and teaches in each of the 4 years of the professional veterinary medicine (PVM) curriculum as well as in graduate level courses for residents and graduate students.

Figure 1. A nuclear medicine bone scan using 99mTc-HDP as a radiopharmaceutical, showing multiple bone cancer (osteosarcoma) lesions involving the ribs of a canine patient.

Figure 2. A Tc-99m-04 scan on a cat, showing bilaterally enlarged thyroids, compatible with hyperthyroidism; the most commonly diagnosed endocrinological disorder in cats.
