Dr. Susan LaRue
Dr. Susan LaRue is originally from Maryland and did her undergraduate education at the University of Maryland. She received her DVM from the University of Georgia, where she also did her internship. She came to Colorado State University in 1983 for a residency in small animal surgery, and subsequently became a Diplomate in the College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS). During her surgery residency Dr. LaRue developed a strong interest in oncology. She received her Ph.D from the (then) Department of Radiological Health Sciences working on tumor cell kinetics in canine osteosarcoma and lymphoma. She also did training in Radiation Oncology under the mentorship of Dr. Edward L. Gillette. Dr. LaRue was a charter diplomate in the American College of Veterinary Radiology, specialty of Radiation Oncology, and has served as president of that organization.
Dr. LaRue is currently a Professor of Radiation oncology at CSU and head of the Radiation Oncology Service. Her clinical experience combined with her background in radiation biology makes her the idea person to apply the new technology available on the Trilogy Linear accelerator to veterinary patients. Dr. LaRues passion is translational research using naturally occurring tumors in pet animal patients. Our goal is to design studies that help the individual patient as well as provide information to better understand the biology of the cancer.
Frank Conway
Frank is a Radiation Oncology Technician in the Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences. Frank was born and raised in NY and has the sarcastic wit to prove it. His duties consist of caring for radiation therapy patients, setting up the daily treatments. Frank has undergone extensive training through Varian in treatment administration and machine operations.Frank maintains contact with clients through callbacks, manages various databases, and assists in residents education.
Frank enjoys volunteering. Some of his causes are: doing anesthesia at a low income veterinary hospital, assisting at monthly vaccine clinics, helping the humane society in moving excess food & prescription diets to Senior Citizen non profit veterinary hospital and to the Northern Colorado AIDS Project (NCAP).
Chana Fuller
Chana is a Radiation Oncology technician in the Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences. Since 1998, Chana has administered anesthesia to the patients that receive radiation at CSU. She also performs nursing care and assists with pain management for patients. The thing that she enjoys most about her job is the camaraderie that exists in the radiation oncology service!
Dr. Fred Harmon
Dr. Joseph "Fred" Harmon is an Associate Professor in the Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences and a medical physicist specializing in therapeutic and diagnostic radiological physics and provides clinical physics services to the VTH radiation oncology and radiology services. He is developing new courses in diagnostic imaging physics and radiation therapy physics for DVM residents and medical health physics graduate students. He commissioned the new Trilogy linear accelerator and is looking forward to working with ACC staff members on exciting research opportunities the new linac provides. Fred enjoys hiking with his wife Rosie and snowboarding with his son Taylor. He is also a beer connoisseur and enjoys and home brewing.
Dr. Susan Kraft
Dr. Kraft is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences and serves as a veterinary radiologist providing clinical service in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and as co-director of the Magnetic Resonance Imaging service in the Animal Cancer Center. Her special clinical imaging interests are magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and cancer imaging. In addition to board certification in diagnostic imaging, she is also boarded in veterinary radiation oncology with interest in the application of imaging modalities for treatment planning as well as evaluation of radiation effects. Dr. Krafts research involves the use of MRI and MR spectroscopy for detecting and characterizing cancer and in evaluating its response to therapy. This particularly involves imaging of parameters important to treatment response such as tumor hypoxia, perfusion, and tumor metabolism.
For fun Dr. Kraft enjoys time with her family, music, hiking, spending time outdoors and hanging out in her hot tub!
Billie Arceneaux
CT/MRI Radiotherapy Technician
Billie began her CSU career on October 1, 1988. She is extensively trained in the fields of radiation therapy, dosimetry, CT, MR and PACs administration. Billie has undergone extensive training through Varian for patient administration, treatment planning, IMRT and on-board imaging. Billie is also a very happy grandma!
Dr. Jamie Custis
Originally from Virginia, Jamie Custis received his Bachelor of Science in Animal and Poultry Sciences from Virginia Tech in 2001. He earned his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 2005. During his two years in a progressive small animal practice in Houston, Texas, Jamie developed a particular interest in oncology. In an effort to pursue further oncologic training, he completed a one year small animal medicine and surgery internship at Carolina Veterinary Specialists in Greensboro, North Carolina in 2008. As a resident in radiation oncology, Dr. Custis is interested in the utilization of new modalities such as intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) in an effort to improve local tumor control and decrease normal tissue side effects. Outside of work, Jamie enjoys golfing, running, hiking, and travelling with his wife, Holly, and their Labrador retriever, Ariel.
