Spring 2008
Course Description: Classes will meet
once weekly for a one-hour class period. One or two research papers will be provided for discussion
each week. Journal articles will be available at least one week in advance.
Students will each have an opportunity to facilitate the discussion of one paper during the semester.
Classic papers as well as current research may be presented.
Journal articles will be made available on the web site.
In addition to student-led discussions, several guest speakers will be invited to participate.
We will also participate in several field trips to local industries. Interdisciplinary interactions with students particularly those in ergonomics, health physics, occupational health psychology, occupational medicine will be emphasized.
Textbook: None. There will be selected readings from the peer-reviewed scientific literature assigned
for class discussion throughout the semester. Please refer to the class schedule and the class web
site.
Readings: Reading assignments will be posted on the course website. Please prepare for class by
reading the assigned papers before class. Class discussions will focus directly on the reading
assignments. Other optional readings may be distributed in class or posted on the course website.
Course Requirements: Students are expected to attend all scheduled class sessions. If you cannot
attend class please check the class web page for materials. Class discussions will cover various
topics and students are expected to participate and share their ideas.
Grading: Grades will be assigned based on attendance, participation in class discussion, and
completion of assigned readings. Additionally, each registered student will be required to give
a 15-20 minute background presentation and lead the discussion during one class period for a grade.
Facilitators: The brief presentation (15-20 minutes) should include some helpful background
material about the study. Facilitators should be ready to lead the discussion for the remaining
class time. It may be helpful to prepare discussion questions to keep the discussion focused.
