- The ongoing
fluid losses from the gastrointestinal tract must be replaced as they occur.
For example, if the puppy vomits an estimated volume of 50 ml, an additional 100 ml of
fluid must be added to its fluids during the next 8-hour period.
- The fluid of choice in this situation would be Normosol-R or lactated
Ringer's solution with supplemental KCl.
- Potassium levels must be monitored because of the losses in the vomitus
and diarrhea.
- The puppy is likely to have metabolic acidosis secondary to vomiting, and
therefore, use of an alkalizing solution such as Normosol-R solution is indicated.
