Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia Pearls

  • IMHA patients present with lethargy, anorexia and depression and may have pale mucous membranes, fever, tachycardia or hepatosplenomegaly.
  • Demonstration of a regenerative, macrocytic anemia along with a positive Coombs' test or autoagglutination is diagnostic for IMHA.
  • Treatment includes immunosuppressive doses of prednisone or azathioprine or cyclosporine and possibly blood transfusions.
