Severe Burn Injury Pearls

  • Burn injuries result in protein loss and hypovolemia, leading to possible renal damage, DIC, liver dysfunction or sepsis.
  • Give crystalloids first, followed by colloids and monitor ongoing protein losses.
  • Debride wounds daily, use topical antimicrobial agents and wet-to-dry bandages.
  • Manage pain with opioids.
