Case #21 -- Smoke Inhalation

Smoke Inhalation Pearls

  • Most complications from smoke inhalation do not develop for a few hours to days.
  • Beware of laryngeal edema leading to respiratory distress--intubation or a tracheostomy may need to be done.
  • Treat with 100% oxygen immediately, crystalloid fluids and nebulization/coupage.   DO NOT start antibiotics or give steroids.
  • Watch for pneumonia, ARDS or sepsis.
