Case #18 -- Methanol Toxicity

Methanol Toxicity Pearls

  • Methanol intoxication causes vomiting, ataxia, hyperexcitability, convulsions or coma and results in a metabolic acidoses +/- pancreatitis.
  • Treat with gastric lavage/inducing vomiting, activated charcoal, high rate of fluids, and either 4MP or 20% ethanol.
  • Monitor blood gases and urine output and observe for  signs of overhydration.
