Families and individuals often seek support, counseling,
and education to help them prepare for and deal with the
potential loss of a seriously ill or injured animal. Founded in
1985, Changes: The Support for People and Pets Program at the
Veterinary Teaching Hospital provides services to clients before,
during, and after the deaths of beloved pets.
The Changes program is directed by professional counselors
trained to provide grieving owners with education and support
throughout the grieving process. Changes counselors also counsel
veterinary students, staff and faculty members who must deal with
their own emotions, and those of their client's, when a patient
dies.
Another important part of the Changes program is the teaching component. Changes counselors teach courses to veterinary students that focus on the grieving process and how they can help their grieving clients. They also offer workshops, seminars, and presentations on pet-related grieving and loss. Most Changes Program services are available at no cost to hospital clients.
