April 25-26, 2014
This course is designed to educate the surgical or pre-surgical equine resident or avid practitioner with introductory techniques in evaluation and surgical treatment of the acute colic.
The clinical evaluation of the acute abdominal patient leading to a decision whether medical treatment or surgical intervention will be reviewed. Surgical therapy of common causes of colic will be discussed, including the diagnostic evaluation, abdominal ultrasonography, surgical decision-making, selection of anesthetic drugs, preoperative patient preparation, anesthesia, intraoperative findings, postoperative care and complications.
The lab will include application of abdominal ultrasound used in the clinical evaluation and treatment of an acute abdominal patient. This will be followed by a demonstration of standing laparoscopy and a thorough review of surgical anatomy. Selecting anesthetic regimens, selection of laparotomy approach, and recognition and correction of abdominal lesions will be included. Each participant will have the opportunity to explore the abdominal cavity and practice other procedures they wish to perform. Indications for the use of surgical stapling will be reviewed and the techniques illustrated.
