Colic in the Horse
Surgical Techniques & Management of the Acute Abdomen in the Horse
The clinical evaluation of the acute abdominal patient leading to a decision whether medical treatment or surgical intervention is required will be reviewed. Medical and surgical therapy of common causes of colic will be discussed with specific emphasis on diagnostic evaluation, abdominal ultrasonography, surgical decision-making, selection of anesthetic drugs, preoperative patient preparation, anesthesia, intraoperative findings, postoperative care and complications. Indications for the use of surgical stapling will be reviewed and the techniques illustrated.
The laboratory will include application of techniques that are used in the clinical evaluation and treatment of an acute abdominal patient. This will be followed by a demonstration of standing laparoscopy and a thorough review of surgical anatomy. The decision for surgical intervention, selecting anesthetic regimens, selection of laparotomy approach and correction of the intraabdominal lesions are included. Each participant will have the opportunity to explore the abdominal cavity, perform a hand-sewn or stapled intestinal resection and anastomosis on harvested sections of small intestine, and other procedures they wish to perform.
