Introduction to Small Animal Laparoscopy
Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive approach to the abdomen for organ biopsy, diagnostic techniques and surgical procedures. The first day of the course will include lectures on the procedures to be performed in the laboratory, followed by a hands-on session using fresh pig cadavers to practice the basic laparoscopic skills. On the second day the participants will perform laparoscopy on anesthetized dogs. Participants will learn basic approaches and tissue manipulation. Laparoscopic techniques include tissue biopsy (liver, pancreas and kidney) and basic laparoscopic-assisted techniques including, intestinal biopsy, gastropexy, and ovariectomy or ovariohysterectomy. This course is intended for those who have minimal or no experience with laparoscopy. The laboratory is limited in size to three people per animal. Technicians can attend lectures and observe in the laboratory. Following the course participants may elect to register for the laparoscopic ovariectomy course offered the afternoon of the second day.
