Laparoscopic Ovariectomy

Laparoscopic ovariectomy is rapidly becoming the state of the art method for sterilization of female dogs and cats.  This course will begin with a short review the surgical technique and also consider the efficacy and the ethics of incorporating laparoscopic ovariectomy into practice versus the traditional open surgical spay.  Each participant will then perform an ovariectomy on a dog that will be returned to the local animal shelter for adoption. Participants will perform the surgery using the Valley Lab Ligasure™ coagulation system.
This course is only for veterinarians having laparoscopic experience. The course can be taken immediately after the basic laparoscopic course or as a separate course with documentation of experience.  When this course is offered with the basic laparoscopy course, the lecture on ovariectomy is incorporated in the basic course.  When the course is taught separately a 1-hour lecture on ovariectomy is given prior to the laboratory.  This course provides 4 hours of continuing education credits and technicians are invited to attend the lecture and observe the laboratory.
